Mr. Colbert Goes To Washington

I don't know if you've ever checked out "The Colbert Report" on Comedy Central, but it's quickly becoming a staple in my household. I would even go as far as to say that it outshines Jon Stewart's "Daily Show". While I love Stewarts swarmy wiseass commentary and humorous assignment reports, Colbert is near impossible to turn off. In character, he comes off as a well dressed, ill informed neocon apologist, with a little bit of Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, and a lot of Bill O'Reilly thrown in to boot. Bill actually believed that Colbert was sincerely attempting to imitate him.

Saturday, Colbert was invited to the White House Corrospondent's Dinner, and gave a rousing speech (or roast, if you will) directed at the Bush Administration. George and Laura, in attendance, forgot to laugh.

Story

Here's some gems from the speech.

[snip]He attacked those in the press who claim that the shake-up at the White House was merely re-arranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. “This administration is soaring, not sinking,” he said. “If anything, they are re-arranging the deck chairs on the Hindenburg.”[/snip]

[snip]He noted former Ambassador Joseph Wilson in the crowd, just three tables away from Karl Rove, and that he had brought " Valerie Plame." Then, worried that he had named her, he corrected himself, as Bush aides might do, "Uh, I mean ... he brought Joseph Wilson's wife." He might have "dodged the bullet," he said, as prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald wasn't there.[/snip]

[snip]Also lampooning the press, Colbert complained that he was “surrounded by the liberal media who are destroying this country, except for Fox News. Fox believes in presenting both sides of the story — the president’s side and the vice president’s side." In another slap at the news channel, he said: "I give people the truth, unfiltered by rational argument. I call it the No Fact Zone. Fox News, I own the copyright on that term."[/snip]

    Thanks for the link. I was unaware of this story. I also don't miss an episode of the Colbert Report. It's pretty clear that some of the people he interviews are not in on the joke... with some of the questions he asks I'm surprised some people don't get angry and end the interview!

    Ok, this is a little creepy. I just posted a transcript from Colbert's White House Correspondent's Dinner (lifted from Kos) on my site...with the exact same photo on the "Thank You" site. Weird.

Right Wing Cheerleader of the Week Award

I'm a frequent reader of right wing propaganda. I'll admit that. I think there are quite a few decent, straight forward Republicans out there who run excellent commentary on their blogs. They are typically warm and open to respectful debate. Mike M. 's blog is a good example. Blognonymous has a great post on a new Washington Post chart that basically shows what Democrats have said all along... Abramhoff was lining three Republican pockets for every one Democrat pocket. But if you read sites like anti-Dem No Agenda or Espella Humanzee , you'll see how Republican apologists are trying to spin the whole "they did it too so it's okay" arguement. In fact, No Agenda makes no note of the blatent corruption happening on their side of the aisle. Typical. Still, I haven't heard squat from the MSM about Bush's $100,000 in campaign contributions received from the lobbyist. Of that $100,000, the Administration has agreed to return 6% of the amount to charity. That's kinda like donating a small portion of your bank robbery pot to the Red Cross.
