...while my iMac gently weeps...

Steve Jobs makes good on his promise to shove Intel chips into upcoming Mac computers.

[snip] SAN FRANCISCO (CNNMoney.com) - Apple CEO Steve Jobs Tuesday unveiled the first Apple computers ever to use an Intel processor and announced that by the end of the year, Apple's entire computer line will contain Intel chips.[/snip]

As a Mac purist, this really bothers me. Maybe, performance wise, the Intel chip will be faster than the Motorola G5's Apple uses now... but it opens up a slippery slope where someday, *gasp*, we will see Macs rolling out of the plants with Windows preinstalled as the Operating System. After all, the biggest reason you can't install Windows on a Mac now, (other than running the OS in a slow and awkward virtual shell) is because Windows is incompatible with the Motorola chipset.

[snip]Apple initially will offer two Intel-based iMac models: one with a 17-inch monitor for $1,299 and one with a 20-inch monitor and a faster processor for $1,699. In February, it will debut the MacBook Pro, which features two processors, in two varieties -- a model with a 1.67GHz processor for $1,999, and one with a 1.83GHz processor for $2,499.[/snip]

MacBook Pro? What happened to iBook or PowerBook? Quite possibly, that is the stupidest name for a notebook computer I've ever seen.

We'll see what happens with this. I don't have high hopes though. Steve seems to be continually drawn to the dark side. First he kisses up to Microsoft to get Office on the Mac...now, he's sleeping with Intel.

  1. I kind of like the move. I have a Mac desktop and a laptop with windows and my Mac jams up to the point where it is too frustrating to use. I've tried to defrag the hard-drive, but I can't find any software to do it - so I'm not even sure if it is possible with a Mac. I don't have any special software on the thing but it runs like a turtle.

I love the way Mac works when I use photoshop and edit video, but downloading and browsing the net is a real hassle.

  2. Hmm. We have an iMac 350 that's about 7 years old now as well as a Cube that is used as a mp3 file server. For being 7 years old, the iMac runs extremely well. She's a little slow sometimes with java based software, but other than that... runs like a top. I've never defragged our computer either, although I'm pretty sure there are third party programs out there that do it.

Well, as long as SJ's at the helm it won't happen. No one has been a more fervent advocate not liscensing hardware designs of software than Jobs.

Though I can remember a time when we referred to Intel's as "kludge-o-matics". It's still the right move for Apple. Motorola and IBM just didn't give enough of a damn about the PowerPC line.
