Good news to report on the home (finding) front. We are officially in-contract on our first house. Our new address as of June 3rd will be on Andrew Ave in Westerville.
Last week, we were both quite frustrated and worried about the prospects of finding a house in the small window of time we had before Chris comes out. Thursday morning we went and looked at a house nearby the said house on Andrew with our realtor. The showing was a quite roomy split-level in an older Westerville neighborhood. The house was certainly acceptable, but it didn't quite have the character to make us fall in love with it. We left the showing even more depressed and uncertain.
Later that afternoon, Kate was browsing through the MLS listings while on break at work. She forwarded me a few houses to take a look at. One was this lovely Victorian house in Reynoldsburg. It was in really nice condition, but neither of us really were interested in driving 20 minutes to and from work, and to be honest, Reynoldsburg was definitely no sincerely! There was too much urban development in that area of Columbus, and it lacked the small town charm we had come to savor in Delaware. The second house was a smallish ranch home on Andrew Ave. It had a semi-brick exterior with nice landscaping. No garage though, which was one of our must-have wishes. The interiors looked good though... from the pictures, it looked to be very well maintained and had a huge kitchen, something that Kate really wanted in a home. I decided to drive by the house after work just to take a look.
It was much nicer in person than what I saw on the listing. The front yard was professionally landscaped. There were mature trees planted in front of the house between the sidewalk and curb. And it had a nice privacy fence along the sides of the house. It definitely had curb appeal. The neighborhood was nice as well. All older homes, but still very close to a neighborhood of nice expensive newer homes. A park was right around the corner and Hoover receiver was within a few city blocks or a quick bike ride.
I told Kate about the house and what I thought of it and we decided to go ahead and email our realtor in hopes of taking a look at the inside. It didn't have a garage or basement, which was a bit of a letdown, but it did seem to have everything else we were looking for.
Our realtor gave me a call at work the next morning. She told me that the house was more than likely in-contract already and our chances of seeing it were slim to none. She promised to bug the listing agent anyway and find out what she could. An hour later she called me back and asked if we could meet her at the house at 12:30. The seller had been considering an offer, but decided to allow us to see it anyway.
After walking through the house, we both decided that it was everything we needed. The kitchen was huge and modern. The rooms were large and the master bedroom had two closets, one for each of us. There was a nice aluminum awning over the front porch, perfect for sitting out and reading a nice book on a rainy day. There was also a fairly large Florida room attached to the back, as well as a large cement patio perfect for putting up a basketball hoop. We stood in the kitchen a while after seeing the house and after a few seconds of verbal appraisals, decided to make an offer.
After work, we went directly to the realtor's office and sat down to sign our offer. We went home soon thereafter and I received a call from our realtor not an hour after leaving her office. They had accepted our offer! The next day we singed the paperwork and were officially in contract!
Saturday evening we celebrated with happy hour at Applebees followed by a nice posh dinner at The Columbus Fish Market, where I tried unsuccessfully to get Kate to eat some crabcake!
All in all, it was a great weekend, despite the dreary weather. Sometimes God works in mysterious ways.
