Exxon Goes Before SCOTUS to Fight Damages Claims

Image
Exxon Mobil Corp. is going into the arguments Wednesday asking the high court to erase a federal court's awarding of punitive damages to nearly 33,000 fishermen, Native Alaskans, landowners, businesses and local governments. The 33,000 were the plaintiffs in a class-action lawsuit who claimed private economic harm from the spill. The company claimed it had already paid many millions in government fines, as well as $3.4 billion in cleanup costs. A jury awarded $5 billion to the plaintiffs in 1994. A federal court later cut that amount in half, but it still was believed to be the largest punitive damages judgment of its kind in U.S. courts. Impatience and frustration, residents say, are the guiding emotions 19 years later. "Our region needs closure, and this is a vital component of our healing process," said Travis Vlasoff, a native Chugach fisherman from the village of Tatitlek, near Cordova. "We deserve justice for all we've endured and continue to endure fo...

Lincoln and Kennedy...

Abraham Lincoln was elected to Congress in 1846. John F. Kennedy was elected to Congress in 1946. Abraham Lincoln was elected President in 1860. John F. Kennedy was elected President in 1960. Both were particularly concerned with civil rights. Both wives lost their children while living in the White House. Both Presidents were shot on a Friday. Both Presidents were shot in the head . Now it gets really weird. Lincoln 's secretary was named Kennedy. Kennedy's Secretary was named Lincoln Both were assassinated by Southerners. Both were succeeded by Southerners named Johnson. Only in Ohio - Man Sentenced to 8 Years for 19th DUI

http://www.wdtn.com/Global/story.asp?S=7895077 Video: http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/crime/2008/02/20/dnt.19th.dui.wkrc HAMILTON, Ohio (AP) - A judge in southwest Ohio has sentenced a man convicted of his 19th drunk driving offense to eight years in prison. Stephen Wolf was sentenced in Hamilton today by Judge Noah Powers of Butler County Common Pleas Court. Authorities say plenty of people drive despite having a suspended or revoked license, and locking them up is the only way to keep them off the roads. Wolf, now 51, pleaded guilty last week to the charge of operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol. The Butler County Prosecutor's Office said Wolf received his first drunk driving conviction in 1978.

Apartment Hunting

So I've been looking through Craigslist and other places for an apartment. For those who don't know, I moved out of an overpriced 1br back in December and have been renting a room at my best friend's house the last 2 and a half months. This was only meant to be temporary.. I'm not a roommate type person and although he's my best friend and all.. I still to this day feel like I am invading he and his wife's privacy. So I've been looking for something that I can afford near my new job. Unfortunately, I work in Grandview and it's nestled right inside a high rent district...and near the OSU campus...so pickings have been slim. Ideally, I would like to get a two bedroom. That way, Chris would have his own room when he comes out in the summer. Last year, he bunked in the living room the whole two months he was out, and I felt awful about it. He's nearly 13 and I'm sure he's at an age where he NEEDS his own room. So the hunt goes on...

The Director who Films Your Life Test

Image
Your Score : Akira Kurosawa Your film will be 52% romantic, 45% comedy, 33% complex plot, and a $ 40 million budget. Action-packed, light romance maybe with situation humor but with a moral to your story, this Japanese master filmmaker would make your film an instant cult classic -- were he still alive. This is the guy who made the movie on which George Lucas' Star Wars is based (The Hidden Fortress). Also his movie Seven Samurai inspired the American classic The Magnificent Seven. I think you now have a hint how your bio film is gonna turn out. Rather than hire George Lucas, let's dig up Kurosawa to create the classic spectacle that is your life. A simple drama with light touches of comedy, but a big budget. Bush sets a new record.... the LARGEST BUDGET PROPOSAL IN HISTORY!

Fiscal conservative, MY ASS. In the nation's first-ever $3 trillion budget, President Bush seeks to seal his legacy of promoting a strong defense to fight terrorism and tax cuts to spur the economy. Democrats, who control Congress, are pledging fierce opposition to Bush's final spending plan — perhaps even until the next president takes office. The 2009 spending plan sent to Congress on Monday will project huge budget deficits, around $400 billion for this year and next and more than double the 2007 deficit of $163 billion. But even those estimates could prove too low given the rapidly weakening economy and the total costs of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, which Bush does not include in his request for the budget year beginning Oct. 1. Last year, when Democrats were newly in the majority, there were drawn-out veto struggles. This year's fights could be worse because it is an election year. As in past years, Bush's biggest proposed increases are in national secur...
